Recognized for their unique arrangements of the classical repertoire, the Montrealers collective9 released today his third album entitled “Vagues et Ombres”. On the album are the arrangements of Thibault Bertin Maghit of works by Claude Debussy — such as Moonlight, The sea, footsteps on the snow, and others. It also presents the premiere of the Montreal composer Luna Pearl Woolnewest piece, Contactwhich is “a sound view of the underwater world of belugas in the St. Lawrence Estuary”.
“This recording was born out of our deep admiration for great work — could we, with nine string players, interpret La Mer by Claude Debussy and do it justice? In a musical style where timbre and color are paramount, attempt to ‘Performing this iconic work in a single family of instruments seemed outrageous, but we love a challenge,’ said ensemble musicians Andrea Stewart and Thibault Bertin-Maghit.
“It is definitely a reinterpretation. The fact of being less numerous allows us to reveal in a different way a rich rhythmic game already present in the work while shedding new light on the balance of voices and harmonies.
