“This recording was born out of our deep admiration for great work — could we, with nine string players, interpret La Mer by Claude Debussy and do it justice? In a musical style where timbre and color are paramount, attempt to ‘Performing this iconic work in a single family of instruments seemed outrageous, but we love a challenge,’ said ensemble musicians Andrea Stewart and Thibault Bertin-Maghit.

“It is definitely a reinterpretation. The fact of being less numerous allows us to reveal in a different way a rich rhythmic game already present in the work while shedding new light on the balance of voices and harmonies.
