Gustavus Jazz Ensemble launches its Spring Break tour

The Gustavus Jazz Ensemble is on tour in Minnesota from March 19-25.

The Gustavus Jazz Ensemble begins its Spring Break tour on Saturday March 19. The ensemble will tour Minnesota, play jazz clubs and work with high schools across the state. A full list of tour stops is below.

The tour will feature a wide range of music from legends like Benny Carter, Quincy Jones, Sonny Rollins, Hoagy Carmichael, Benny Golson and Pat Metheny as well as newcomers Courtney Wright and David von Kampen. Concert programs for this year’s individual tour will be hosted by the ensemble’s music education majors and will feature senior vocalist Anya Menk ’22.

Beginning with a fundraiser in the Twin Cities, the tour will kick off at the Crooners Supper Club in Minneapolis. Mike and Donna Wolsted, longtime supporters of jazz in Minnesota, are sponsoring the event.

After that, the ensemble will spend the week working with colleges and high schools across the state. For some schools, the ensemble will spend the whole day doing mini-performances for different groups, giving group/individual lessons and masterclasses, or doing side-by-side rehearsals. At other schools, they’ll show up in the afternoon for a combined rehearsal with their high school jazz band, then perform a concert that night. Each high school visit will include a concert that night, free and open to the public. The Jazz Ensemble will be working with some alumni of the Gustavus Jazz program as part of the tour. They will work with Jonathan Grimsby ’06 in Duluth East and Andy Deluca ’19 in Monticello.

The tour will end with a performance at another jazz club in town, Jazz Central Studios. The following week, the Gustavus Jazz Ensemble and the Adolphus Jazz Ensemble will perform together at a home concert at the Jussi Björling Recital Hall in Gustavus.

Music touring director Coleden Wedge ’20 says he’s thrilled the students are coming out and performing. “All of these students, especially the seniors, have been missed so much over the past few years that we just want to give them a chance to go and perform in front of as many people as possible,” he said.

“As a music department alum, some of my favorite memories of touring are when we had a free morning in a city before going to a workshop or hanging out in a high school auditorium waiting for the next one. upcoming band It’s all those little ‘in-between’ moments that can really make a tour special,” Wedge said.

The Gustavus Jazz Program celebrates over 50 years of excellence. The Gustavus Jazz Ensemble, formerly known as the Gustavus Jazz Lab Band and Gustavus Stage Band, have performed locally at the MMEA Mid-Winter Clinic and on stage at the Prairie Home Companion, released several acclaimed recordings and participated at the Elmhurst and Eau Claire jazz festivals. (Winner of the Collegiate Big Band category at Eau Claire in 2015), in addition to touring extensively across the United States. The ensemble has also performed internationally, touring with the Gustavus Symphony Orchestra in Greece and Macedonia in 2016 and Malaysia and Singapore in 2020.

Tickets for performances at Crooners Supper Club and Jazz Central Studios are $10. All other performances are free and no tickets are required.
